Week 9

This week is about making illustrations that look dynamic and show movement but also getting the process done quickly, with the thumbnails being very quick and the resulting images taking an hour at most.

Vertigo

  • a steeplejack
  • daytime
  • windy day
For this one I tried to use a dramatic angle to show the height of the tower the steeplejack is climbing, the tree is there to show the blowing of the wind and the birds are to make it look more alive and like there's more movement going on. The figure and the birds are towards the left to make it look like the wind is blowing over that way and even moving him on the ladder. I did this piece with watercolours and compared to some of the others this one feels relatively complete.

Ambushed

  • two figures
  • a city's back streets
  • night
For this one, the diagonal is meant to exaggerate the "snatching" of the figure. I used black and grey alcohol markers because I wanted it to look really dramatic and it also gives a better impression of it being night time. I feel like this image represents the mystery and intrigue of the title.

Tango

  • two figures
  • movement
  • sexy, close, exotic
I recorded a time lapse for this one as you can see to the left, this is by far my favourite. I think it really conveys movement, passion and energy well. I love the way it came out, it was very spontaneous as you can see towards the end of the video but it came out so well as I think it helped to add to the energy of the piece. I used jelly gouache for this one.

A Giant Leap

  • rooftop chase
  • three figures
  • peril, bravery
This image hasn't translated amazingly once being scanned in but while I was making it I was thinking it could look really cool as a lino print if I were to take this further. Its probably my least favourite of the bunch just because this final image doesn't look that great but I really like the angle and the dynamics of it. This one is just done with pencil.

Systems Failure

  • one figure
  • spaceship
  • physical struggle
I used jelly gouache again for this one, side note but they are so fun to use! There's a lot of paint bleeding around the edges but time didn't allow for me to clean that up - plus I kind of like how it looks. I did this one in two goes, I did the background and it was incredibly wet but I didn't want to use the hairdryer on it because I didn't want the water to move around so I had to just leave it to dry for a while before coming back in later to add the astronaut and spaceship.

January Sales

  • claustrophobia
  • queueing, doors opening
  • multiple figures
Another one I did a time lapse for, this is the only one that I went over the hour mark with but we can blame that on stopping to blow-dry the watercolours. It didn't come out exactly as i had imagined but I think it would've gotten there eventually had there been no time restraints. I kind of wanted it to look a bit "cuter" but I don't think I stylised the figures enough so I slightly missed the mark in that sense.
